EU Calls for Justice 26 Years After Genocide in Srebrenica at Hands of Bosnian Serbs

European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell and EU Enlargement Commissioner Oliver Varhelyi have commemorated the 26th anniversary of the Srebrenica massacre.

They have stressed that attempts to revise history are unacceptable.

“International courts, domestic courts in Bosnia and Herzegovina and neighboring countries must continue to provide justice to all victims of war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide, as well as to their families. Peace can only be built on justice,” they said.

The two officials added that Europe has not forgotten its responsibility in failing to prevent the Srebrenica genocide.

“There can be no impunity – genocide is genocide, whether committed in Srebrenica or elsewhere,” they said.

Yesterday, Bosnia and Herzegovina marked the 26th anniversary of the massacre, which has been described as the worst in Europe since World War II.

In July 1995, Bosnian Serb forces murdered over 8,000 Muslim men and boys.

The International Court of Justice in The Hague ruled in 2007 that these killings constituted genocide.
