EU Regrets Opening of Kosovo’s Embassy in Jerusalem

The European Union has expressed regret over the opening of the Embassy of Kosovo in Jerusalem.

In a press statement by EU spokesperson Peter Stano on Monday, they said that Kosovo’s decision to part ways with the EU position on the issue of Jerusalem, is regrettable.

It comes one day after the Kosovo government announced it had opened the embassy in Jerusalem, as agreed at  White House, and in February with Israel.

Stano noted that the EU position regarding Jerusalem is clear, in line with the UN Security Council Resolution 478 in 1980 that calls on member states to withdraw their diplomatic mission from Jerusalem to Tel Aviv. He added that the status of Jerusalem should be agreed through negotiation between the two parties.

The EU had also criticized earlier Kosovo’s plans before the opening of the embassy in Jerusalem.

Kosovo and Serbia committed to have their embassies in Jerusalem, under an initiative facilitated by the previous US administration. Serbia’s current position is unclear.
