Female Hunger Striker Tries to Commit Suicide in Ballsh

One of the women on hunger strike due to unpaid wages from the Ballsh Oil Refinery has tried to take her own life.

On day 24 of the strike, the media reported that she had tried to slit her wrists. Thankfully, she was prevented by one of the other women on strike.

This week, the women reported that they had been receiving threatening messages telling them to stop the strike. The women remained adamant that they would continue.

The oil women continue the 24th day of the strike, while the media report that one of them tried to kill himself.

After 24 days without food and two protestors hospitalised, the political standoff does not appear to be nearing its end. Rama has repeatedly said he will not be “pressured” to comply with their demands while they are still on strike and they must end the strike in order to engage in dialogue.

The protestors have said they will not end the strike until there is a guarantee that their demands- receiving wage arrears and resuming work- are met.
