German MP Wadephul Questions Albania’s Readiness to Start EU Talks following Demolition of National Theatre

Deputy chairman of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group Johann Wadephul has joined the ranks of international actors denouncing the demolition of Albania’s National Theatre, questioning whether Albania is truly ready for EU accession.

In a May 18 tweet, Wadephul expressed disappointment at the government’s rushed and violent demolition of the Theatre building. As a supporter of Albania’s EU accession perspective, he now finds himself wondering whether opponents of opening negotiations were, in fact, right after all.

President of the European People’s Party (EPP) and former President of the European Council Donald Tusk, the EU delegation in Albania, the German, British and Swedish embassies, Kosovo’s Prime Minister Albin Kurti, and several MEPs have also expressed regret, sadness, or outrage at the demolition of the National Theatre.
