IPH: Increase in Number of Severe Cases of COVID-19

Chief Epidemiologist at the Institute of Public Health, Eugena Tomini said that there’s an increase in the number of cases of COVID-19 patients with severe lung infections and the number of deaths.

In an interview with News24, she said that this has led to the exhaustion of capabilities at the COVID-3 hospital.

In terms of the spread of the virus in schools, Tomini said that children do not spread the disease in the same way as adults and that there is no significant increase in the number of infected children in schools.

In terms of seasonal influenza, she said there have been no deaths from it so far but that there have been cases of influenza infections combined with COVID-19.

Yesterday, the government opened the fourth COVID-19 hospital in Tiranas due to the other three being at capacity. Minister of Health Ogerta Manastirliu said it was opened in line with the government strategy. It has a capacity of 100 beds.

Albania reported 12 deaths and 557 new cases yesterday. With 810 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic, November was the worst month with 301 victims succumbing to the virus.

Also yesterday, a 60-year-old man committed suicide from the second floor of the Shefqet Ndroqi Hospital. This is the fifth suicide since August and the second this month.
