The Parliament of Kosovo has approved a resolution condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and expressing its willingness to host 5,000 Ukrainian refugees.
All 94 deputies present in Parliament voted for the resolution, while the 12 members of Srpska Lista, the political party of the country’s Serb minority, walked out before the vote.
Prime Minister Albin Kurti declared that the attack against Ukraine is “an attack against us all.”
“The Ukrainians did not start this war, but they must fight because they stop fighting there will be no Ukraine. We are showing solidarity with Ukraine because we see ourselves in their struggle for freedom. We are a peace-loving and freedom-loving people. We have strongly condemned and continue to condemn Russian aggression,” he said.
In his speech, Kurti condemned Serbia’s refusal to sanction Russia, stating that he had long raised the alarm about Serbia and its failure to repent for its past crimes.
In the resolution, Parliament asked the Kosovo government to set aside a special fund to help Ukraine.
Deputies also argued that Kosovo should intensify efforts to accelerate its accession to various international organization, including NATO and the European Union.
Before the vote, most MPs displayed signs stating “We Stand with Ukraine” and held a minute of silence to honor the victims of the war. MPs from Srpska Lista did not participate in these actions.
