Mayor of Tirana Erion Veliaj has announced the start of works for the “new university campus” on Facebook, despite there being no information for the public regarding the project, procedures, architects, call for tender or bids.
“Work for the new university campus started. 📚🎓 We promise what we do, we do what we promise,” he wrote on Facebook before attending the Socialist Party congress.
Pictures of the “new university campus” project posted by Veliaj seem identical with those of the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston, US.
The government questionably demolished a dozen of university dormitory building after the November earthquake, saying they were all made uninhabitable by the quake. Mayor Veliaj has promised to build “university campuses” there through public-private partnerships (PPP). His promise is the only known public information.
The promised scheme of PPPs refers to Mayor Veliaj’s previously implemented, seemingly corrupt but uninvestigated concession contracts for the construction of 5 schools worth €14 million, and 4 more schools worth €14 million.
