Most Albanian Forest Fires Are Arson Says Director of Civil Protection Agency

The Director of the National Agency for Civil Protection, Haki Cako has said that most of the fires currently raging in Albania were started deliberately. He added that the State police are actively investigating them.

AKMC reported that in the last seven months, some 329 fires were reported, 51% of which were in July. According to the reports made by Municipalities, the most affected areas are Shkodra, Fieri, Vlora, Durres, Gjirokastra, Lexha, Dibra, Korca, Berat, Kuks, Tirana and Elbasan.

In total, at least 598 hectares have been destroyed including 2419 olive trees and 217 fruit trees.

Cako called on local structures to cooperate with the State Police to find those responsible.

There are currently large, active fires in Gramsh, Qafte Thanes Gorg near Rubik, Tepelene, Gjirokastra, Devoll, and the counties of Lezhe and Mirdita.

Police arrested several individuals from Zhulak Gjirokastra in relation to the fires that were started there.
