Opposition Proposes Plan to Help Businesses Affected by Quake

Opposition leader Lulzim Basha proposed a five-point plan to help businesses following the November 26 earthquake.

Basha presented his proposal in a Facebook post after a meeting with businessmen in Durres:

  1. Exemption from property tax and all local taxes for affected businesses during the reconstruction period.
  2. Exemption from profit tax for all businesses that reinvest profit to recover from earthquake damage.
  3. Suspension of payment of social and health insurance contributions until recovery, and deferred payments to me made in installments after this period.
  4. Exemption from VAT on all items purchased to be used to recover from damages.
  5. Cancellation and suspension of payments for energy and water bills during the natural disaster period.

Basha also urged banks to support businesses affected by earthquake by reviewing the terms for their installment loans when necessary.

The opposition had suggested a three-point emergency plan last week, which Prime Minister Edi Rama dismissed.
