President Urges Government to Improve Construction Code and Support Research Following Albanian Earthquake

Albanian President Ilir Meta requested the government to consider the following four points as part of the post-earthquake measures, after a meeting he held with university professors and academics:

  1. Updating the Physical Risk Map to identify areas with high seismic risk;
  2. Implementing European codes of construction;
  3. Amending legislation on building safety;
  4. Financial support for related research institutions.

Yesterday, opposition leader Lulzim Basha also suggested three urgent steps for the government to take in its earthquake relief plan.

A magnitude 6.3 earthquake hit Albania on November 26, leaving 51 dead, more than 900 injured, and thousands of collapsed buildings.
