Prime Ministers of Albania and Greece, Edi Rama and Kyriakos Mistotakis, will meet tonight to discuss about the maritime agreement between the two countries, TV Klan reported on Tuesday. The meeting will reportedly take place at Mitsotakis’ office at 21.00 on Tuesday.
The two leaders will discuss bilateral relations, issues regarding private property of ethnic minorities in Albania, and issues related to the maritime agreement between the two countries.
On August 26, Mitsotakis told the Greek parliament that his government had decided to expand territorial waters from 6 to 12 nautical miles in the Ioanian Sea, which is shared by Albania, Greece, and Italy.
On the same day, the Albanian government confirmed Greece’s right to do so, but failed to explain how it affects Albania’s waters and a possible deal for the delimitation of waters with Greece. Rama said he had not discussed a maritime agreement with Mitsotakis, which has been a contested issue in the past.
Their meeting tonight comes after an unannounced visit to Turkey by Rama, who met with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in his summer residence. Rama said they had long conversations on several topics during his stay, but mentioned neither Albania-Greece maritime delimitation, nor the conflict in Eastern-Mediterranean between Greece and Turkey.
In the next two days, Rama will attend an annual roundtable organized by the Greek government and The Economist, where rising tensions between Greece and Turkey will be discussed among other topics.
