Professors Condemn Police Violence on Students and Support Protest

The Dean of Faculty of History and Philology made a public statement today supporting the student protest and condemning police violent intrusion inside the university, as well as the violence against students.

The dean demanded the government to retract the law on higher education, which is the main source of contention by students. It also suggested the installment of a working group to include professors and students with the purpose of discussing on the new law.

Professors of the Faculty of Social Sciences have also signed a petition supporting the students and calling on the government to retract the law on higher education.

Professors of the Faculty of Economics have also made similar calls:

“We call on all academic staff at the faculty, and beyond, to express the opinion of their institutions regarding the solutions presented [by government] concerning students’ demands and protest.”

Earlier University of Tirana rector Mynyr Koni and the Forum for Academic Freedoms, an organization of faculty members, had also condemned the violence of the police forced used against students occupying the university building in protest against the government’s education policies.

Hundreds of students continue to occupy seven faculties of the University of Tirana for the fifth day in a row.

Students say they will firmly protest and occupy the university until the government fully meets their demands and retracts the law on higher education.
