Prosecution: No Chemical Waste Lost in Albania

According to the Italian newspaper Pianeta Italiane, 1,300 containers of chemical waste destined for Macedonia have been “lost” between Durrës and the border with Macedonia in Qafë Thanë. A total of 2,600 containers had allegedly arrived in Durrës, while only half of them arrived in the Macedonian capital of Skopje.

Pianete Italiane further mentions that the issue of the lost containers had been part of the discussion between General Prosecutor Adriatik Llalla and Italian Anti-Mafia Director Franco Roberti during the latter’s visit to Tirana last week. The Italian media provide no concrete evidence of the transport or the loss of the containers, however.

The General Prosecution immediately responded to the report, stating:

There is no investigation related to what is claimed in the article related to the possible illegal entry of waste containers.

The Prosecution adds that this has also not been discussed in the meeting with Roberti. The main theme of the discussion was the increase in drug trafficking from Albania toward Italy.
