On May 28, at 13:00, the Appeals Court will review the appeal of former Minister of Interior Affairs Saimir Tahiri regarding his house arrest remand.
Maks Haxhia, Tahiri’s attorney, appealed the May 15 ruling of the Serious Crimes Court, which left the former Minister under house arrest. Immediately following the session, the attorney labelled the ruling as unfair, and claimed that the prosecution had brought forth no evidence to support this remand.
The Prosecution Office, too, appealed the court ruling and requested that minister be taken into custody, claiming that under house arrest Saimir Tahiri could be able to destroy evidence connecting him to the Habilaj gang. It is still not known when the Appeals Court will review the Prosecution’s appeal.
Former Minister Tahiri has been under house arrest since May 12. He stands accused of “trafficking of narcotics” as part of a structured criminal group per articles 28, 283/a, and 333/a of the Albanian Criminal Code, as well as “passive corruption by high state officials or local elected officials” per article 260 of the Criminal Code.
