Albanian police arrested two former Korca post office officials after the Special Prosecution against Corruption (SPAK) issued warrants against them over corruption charges.
The former head of the Korca Post Office, Vater Gora, and former postal worker Albano Bibo are suspected of illicitly gaining about €200,000 by inflating the rental prices for post office units in the district.
A third person is on the run, while 7 more workers of the institution were ordered not to leave the country as they are suspected of participating in the same scheme.
In the last month, SPAK has cracked down on corruption in public institutions in a series of cases. Mayor of Lushnje Fatos Tushe and 8 other municipality workers were arrested over tender rigging suspicions, 9 former and current Ministry of Interior officials were also arrested over similar charges, and the former deputy minister of interior was arrested over charges of bribery.
SPAK is focused on prosecuting crimes committed by public officials and organized crime. It was created as part of Albania’s efforts to reform its judiciary and became functional a year and a half ago.
