This Week in Albania’s Judicial Reform: No One Fired, Two Confirmed

No prosecutor or judge were fired during this week’s vetting in Albania, while there were two confirmations.

The Independent Qualification Commission (KPK) confirmed judge Alba Ahmeti of Kukes Court in duty. No issues were found with the three qualification criteria in the vetting process for the judge: assets, professionalism, and background information.

The vetting commission also confirmed in office Prosecutor Marjeta Zaimi of Tirana on Tuesday, despite some issues with a loan payment. Her professionalism and figure received a positive evaluation.

On Thursday, the Special Appeals Chamber (KPA) completed the investigation into former Judge Alaudin Malaj. The final hearing will be on February 23.

Since 2018, Albania has been implementing a judicial reform relying on vetting all judges and prosecutors. While a large number of them were fired, as a side negative effect, the country was left for more than two years without a functioning High Court and Constitutional Court.
