Two Arrested Over Mass Albanian Data Leak

Two people have been arrested under suspicion of involvement in the data leak that saw the private information of over 690,000 Albanians in the public domain.

The Tirana Prosecutor’s Office has arrested at least two people for leaking the name, ID card, employer, and salary information of taxpayers in Albania, including foreign citizens. It is reported that the individuals work in the National Agency for Information Society.

Sources told Balkan Web that prosecutor’s had identified which NAIS employees had access to the system and were, therefore, able to copy, download, and distribute the database. It is also suspected they are the same individuals who leaked the patronage database, which included the name, ID, voting preference, and ‘patron’, a socialist party member tasked with observing citizens and reporting back on their political preferences.

It seems unlikely that this leak came from the same source however, as it included detailed notes on individual citizens and was tailored for the ruling party.

A database of car registration details has also been leaked but it is not known if the arrested individuals are linked to that as well.

Despite the enormous significance of such personal data being in the public domain, the government has taken no action to strengthen people’s personal and data security.
