Another tragedy has been reported in Durres this morning as a young man took his life.
The individual was found by police after he had hung himself in his apartment. This is the latest in a spate of suicides throughout the country.
In July, six suicides were reported in just one week, four of which occurred in 24 hours.
Last week, an elderly woman in Vlora took her own life.
Earlier this week, a young man being treated for COVID-19 at the Shefqet Ndroqi hospital in Tirana committed suicide by jumping from a third-floor window. The 29-year-old had been diagnosed with COVID-19 and was being treated in the hospital for the last 4 days. He was on the verge of recovery and only had a few days left to remain in the hospital.
While it is not known the reason behind these incidents, multiple studies and international experts have cautioned that there is likely to be a rise in suicides due to the psychological and social effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Isolation, fear, anxiety, economic and social threats, and depression are just some of the issues that have been identified as issues that could result in an increase.
Experts state that active outreach is necessary especially to those directly impacted by the pandemic, older adults, COVID-19 survivors, and those who have been economically affected.
