The Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) has announced it brought a no confidence motion today against Prime Minister Albin Kurti.
Kurti’s Lëvizja Vetëvendosje (LVV) entered a governing coalition with the LDK less than two months ago. However, the parties soon disagreed on how to lift tariffs on Serbian goods imposed by the previous government. Kurti proposed a gradual lifting accompanied with request for Serbia to stop undermining Kosovo’s statehood and to lift non-tariff trade barriers. According to the plan, Serbia’s refusal would be met with reciprocity measures in all areas by Kosovo.
Kurti’s proposal was rebuked by the US administration, with which the LDK sided despite having agreed with the plan in the governing coalition’s program.
Today’s motion presented to Parliament was signed by 46 MPs, including LDK and opposition MPs. It is supported by LDK MPs, and four biggest opposition parties PDK, AAK, NISMA, AKR, which make up more than enough votes for the 61 (out of 120) needed to oust the Kurti Government. The parliament should vote within five days.
Since Kurti fired a LDK minister over statements against government decisions two days ago, LDK leader Isa Mustafa threatened the prime minister with a vote of no confidence that would oust the government. Today Mustafa gave an ultimatum, demanding Kurti to lift the tariffs, reinstate the minister and apologize to LDK.
