Despite ONM & KPK Doubts, Temporary General Prosecutor Arta Marku Passes Vetting

Despite the International Monitoring Operation’s (ONM) doubts regarding Temporary General Prosecutor Arta Marku’s professional capabilities, the Independent Qualification Commission (KPK) has decided she has successfully passed the vetting.

Arta Marku was absent yesterday, during the vetting hearing, when ONM representative Theo Jacobs questioned he familiarity with the law and Marku’s professional abilities, referring to a 2016 case, in which Marku decided on a much harsher remand than that predicted by law.

Furthermore, the KPK itself asked Marku to justify the legality of her actions regarding appointments and dismissals of prosecutors from the time she was appointed Temporary General Prosecutor by a simple Socialist majority in December 2017.

It is important to remember at this time that Arta Marku, upon taking her position as Temporary General Prosecutor, appointed, transferred, and dismissed several prosecutors, in violation of the Constitution, art. 149/a(1)(a).

Despite the fact that neither Marku nor her attorney provided any explanation or additional documentation concerning the legal basis of Marku’s decisions, the KPK decided to reconfirm Marku as Temporary General Prosecutor.
