Kosovo Opens Embassy in Jerusalem

Kosovo has opened its embassy in Jerusalem, the government of Kosovo announced on Sunday.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora said Kosovo’s embassy in Israel opened on March 14, in accordance with the February commitments by both countries to establish diplomatic relations.

“The Embassy of the Republic of Kosovo in Jerusalem will be strongly committed to increase bilateral cooperation and strengthen the international subjectivity of the state of Kosovo,” a statement by the ministry read.

The embassy is led by a charge d’affaires for the moment.

The government of Kosovo pledged to open its embassy in Jerusalem last September, in exchange for Israel recognizing the country. It came as part of commitments taken on by leaders of Kosovo and Serbia at the White House to normalize economic relations, under the push and facilitation of President Trump’s administration.

Serbia committed to move its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem but may review its pledge.

Kosovo’s decision to open an embassy in Jerusalem was criticized by the European Union, calling it “an unfortunate decision”. Turkey and the Arab League also opposed the decision, calling on Kosovo to reverse it.

The country held snap elections on February 14, resulting in a win for the opposition. While the new government and parliament are yet to be established, election winner Vetevendosje party has suggested it will review the decision-making process of the outgoing government regarding the matter, taking into consideration the US and EU stances.
